New York, NY - April 26, 2011 – During the Age of Discovery, explorers trekked from the West

in search of exotic fruits, fabrics, and spices of the East. In the Information Age, the World Wide

Web provides a channel that creates a portal to art, culture and music. In light of this, Theo

Martins extends his hand to the other side of the globe for his first collaboration with Malaysian

pop singer Mizz Nina. Their joint effort is titled “Get It,” and is produced by DJ Fuzz.

Originally released as "Let me C U Get It" on Mizz Nina’s 2010 LP What You Waiting For, “Get

It” is a dance-infused reworking of the popular cut, set to the tune of a pulsating four on the floor

drum beat, blaring synthesizer blurps and screaming sirens. In other words, sound the alarm,

and make your way to the dance floor.

"I am so blessed and excited to be able to collaborate with the talented Theo Martins and to

have it remixed by DJ Fuzz,” Mizz Nina says.

Theo Martins is equally excited about their pairing. “The opportunity to collaborate with another

artist from the other side of the world means a lot to me,” he says. “Mizz Nina is such a great

artist and to have the opportunity to work with such a creative person has been quite humbling."

The Providence, Rhode Island-bred musician professes that he chose to be on a dance remix of

the R&B original "because it has such a global feel to it. The rhythm and the feeling of this song

makes you want to move and dance. People want to forget about all of the troubles and worries

going on in their world and enjoy themselves."

Mizz Nina is the hottest female pop artist in Malaysia. She entered the Malay rap scene in

the late 90s, and in years since has spearheaded the electro groove movement in Southeast

Asia. Last year, Mizz Nina garnered over 2.7 million views on YouTube for her single "What

You Waiting For," featuring Colby O' Donis. The song broke a record in Malaysia as the most

downloaded local English song by a Malay artist with over 600 thousand ringtones sold.

Theo Martins is Providence, Rhode Island-based MC. His genre-defying rap style was recently

introduced in large part on Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor, a mixtape released independently

this past March. The project was a creative mashup of electro, dubstep, funk and a multitude

of other dance platforms. Theo’s fresh approach to hip-hop has won him praise from popular

media outlets like Complex, XXL, The Washington Post, URB and GQ, among others.

become a renowned battle DJ. He has hosted mix shows on Malaysia’s RED 104.9 and Fly

DJ FUZZ bersama album terbarunya Mixology 3.

MENGGALAS tanggungjawab sebagai disc jockey (DJ) tidak dinafikan sering dihadap pertuduhan kurang enak oleh segelintir pihak. Terlibat dalam pengambilan alkohol atau penyalahgunaan dadah, itu antara persepsi biasa dilemparkan buat individu yang menggesek jemari-jemari di atas piring hitam bermain instrumen turntable.

Kononnya, energi yang dimiliki oleh DJ sewaktu mengadakan persembahan di pusat-pusat hiburan kebiasaannya ‘ditemani’ oleh alkohol dan dadah. Maka, tidak hairanlah apabila mereka boleh bertahan dalam tempoh panjang sehingga mencecah dinihari bagi menghidangkan hiburan berterusan kepada pengunjung.

Biar apa jua tanggapan segelintir umum terhadap luaran negatif kerjaya tersebut, yang pasti, salah seorang DJ terkenal dalam arena muzik hip hop, DJ Fuzz, 33, bagaimanapun meluah pendapat peribadi bahawa bukan keseluruhan DJ mengamal gaya hidup Barat dengan meminum arak dan menggunakan dadah.

“Terus terang, saya jarang dengar cerita golongan DJ mengambil dadah sewaktu menjalankan kerja. Tetapi, pada waktu sama, orang lain kena faham persekitaran kelab malam yang menjalankan bisnes masing-masing dengan menghidangkan minuman beralkohol kepada pengunjung di premis mereka setiap waktu.

“Paling jelas, DJ tidak ada kena mengena dengan pengambilan minuman keras atau dadah tambahan pula mereka sekadar datang di pusat-pusat hiburan untuk melakukan tugas. Saya sendiri tidak meneguk arak biarpun lama berkecimpung dalam bidang ini kerana masih tahu batasan tertentu.

“Saya mengamal prinsip kalau tengah bekerja dan mengendalikan turntable, minuman alkohol pengunjung harus berada jauh daripada mesin mixer saya. Ini melibatkan soal kerja sekali gus mata pencarian saya. Lantaran itu, saya harus memastikan diri tidak terpengaruh dengan perkara yang dilarang keras ini.

“Begitupun, ini semua bergantung kepada individu. Cuma, sekali lagi, saya ingin menegaskan, tidak semestinya DJ kena mengambil alkohol dan mabuk sewaktu menjalankan tanggungjawab mereka,” hurai DJ Fuzz ketika ditemui pada pelancaran album Mixology 3 di Laundry Bar, The Curve, Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Selangor baru-baru ini.

Tidak mencuri waktu panjang, DJ Fuzz atau nama penuhnya Farzwa Emir memberitahu, kecintaan mendalam terhadap dunia DJ melebihi daripada segala-gala.

“Tidak adil rasanya menyalahkan kami gara-gara perlakuan seorang atau dua DJ yang terlibat dalam masalah alkohol dan dadah. Pinta saya, beri kami ruang untuk memperlihat bakat masing-masing terutama anak-anak muda untuk berkarya,” ujar DJ Fuzz yang terinspirasi daripada Kid Capri, Funkmaster Flex dan DJ Premier.

Akademi sendiri

Berada di gelanggang DJ selama 11 tahun, DJ Fuzz melangkah ke depan dengan membangunkan sekolah DJ, Akademi DJ Mixology di pusat beli-belah Amcorp Mall, Petaling Jaya sejak tahun 2005. Lebih membanggakan, pusat pengajian kedua telah ditubuhkan di Prangin Mall, Pulau Pinang pada Jun 2010.

MENGAKU persekitaran kerjanya sering 'ditemani' unsur negatif, DJ Fuzz bagaimanapun tidak mudah terpengaruh.

“Saya akui suka mengajar orang lain terutama para pelajar lepasan Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) tentang cara mengendalikan turntable dan mesin mixer. Senang cerita, saya ingin lihat lebih ramai orang Malaysia terlibat sebagai DJ lebih-lebih lagi cabang ini masih belum menerima pendedahan masyarakat sepenuhnya.

“Sebaik saja melancarkan album perdana, Mixologi 1 sekitar enam tahun lalu, salah seorang kenalan, Altimet memunculkan idea kepada saya untuk mengajar budak-budak yang berminat membabitkan diri sebagai DJ. Malah, saya sering menerima panggilan telefon daripada kawan-kawan atau orang luar sambil meminta tunjuk ajar.

“Daripada situ, saya terfikir, ada betul kata Altimet. Pada waktu sama, saya sebenarnya telah mengajar beberapa orang anak muda di rumah dalam tempoh beberapa bulan. Lama kelamaan, saya ambil keputusan untuk membangunkan akademi sendiri diberi nama Akademi DJ Mixology bagi menampung lebih ramai pelajar.

“Kalau dikira, diam tidak diam, saya sudah mengajar 100 orang sejak kebelakangan ini. Situasi ini sebagai peningkatan bagi mengetengah lebih ramai generasi baru untuk menjadi DJ,” ujarnya yang telah mendirikan rumah tangga sejak empat tahun lalu.

Tidak hanya itu, pemuda yang sedang melibatkan diri dalam seni mempertahankan diri Muay Thai juga dalam proses menyiapkan buku hasil tulisan sendiri, Teach Me How To DJ. Menjadi naskhah lengkap berbalut panduan untuk menjadi seorang DJ, ia bakal menemui peminat pada pertengahan tahun ini jika tiada aral melintang di depan.

“Buku ini ditulis sejak Mac 2010. Saya anggap ia merupakan masa sesuai untuk berkongsi segala pengalaman dimiliki selepas terlibat dalam dunia DJ lebih sedekad lalu. Selain menerangkan cara bergelar DJ, saya juga menghurai keistimewaan karier ini berbanding kerjaya lain,” jelas graduan Perakaunan dari Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) itu.

Mengulas kehadiran Mixologi 3 di pasaran baru-baru ini, DJ Fuzz tidak hanya bertindak selaku penerbit. Dia bagaimanapun sempat bereksperimen dengan haluan baru seperti mempersembahkan gandingan bersama beberapa artis popular tempatan. Antaranya ialah Noh (Hujan), Mizz Nina, Altimet, Tactmatic dan Aizat.

“Mixologi 3 menjadi langkah awal saya bekerjasama dengan lebih ramai artis baik dalam dan luar negara. Saya cuba melakukan perubahan tersendiri sebagai eksperimental dalam variasi genre seperti contoh Selamat Pagi Sayang nyanyian Noh dan Di Manapun Engkau Berada (Aizat Amdan). Ia terlihat sebagai kelainan ketara bagi album ini,” katanya.

This marks DJ Fuzz’s final chapter in the Mixology series, a mixtape collection that will definitely go down in history as one of the most successful by a local DJ. Throughout the series, you can hear the maturity and progression from this hip hop deck whiz, and this final chapter is no less awesome with a star-studded line-up that includes Mizz Nina, Altimet, Sona One, Vandal, Thailand’s Big Calo and Dandee, Brunei’s MicBandits, Nigeria’s Young Stunna, American artists Stix and Pryme Status, and even a comeback from Reefa. Indie darling Noh from Hujan lends his vocal to the album’s 1st single ‘Selamat Pagi Sayang’, which possess the same laidback vibe as his jazzy pop duet with Mizz Nina on ‘Kurnia’. The follow-up single from Mixology 3 features another favourite in the Malay scene, Aizat Amdan, on a haunting track called ‘Dimanapun Engkau Berada’. One of the best treats come at the end of the album in the form of ‘Oriental Assault’ by Stylustiks, the turntablist crew that Fuzz is a part of with DJ Cza and DJ Uno. You can definitely feel Fuzz’s different approach on each track and it’s obvious that the DJ was influenced by various types of music when working on the album. A brilliant effort from DJ Fuzz; other Malaysian hip hop DJs better take note.

Winner turns it up with a twist

WHILE it is easy to just walk in to school and pay to take music spinning lessons, only passion for the art will be able to turn a dabbler into a deejay.

“Many people these days can easily afford DJ equipment and lessons but if they don’t put in the effort, it is quite pointless,” said DJ Reeve, the winner of the Astro Hitz Spin Master competition.

The 24-year-old, whose real name is Reeve Goh Kian Wai, beat DJ Hightech during the finals at Zouk Club KL to emerge champion, winning an all-expenses paid trip to Brisbane.

Goh started spinning about five years ago, when a friend convinced him to take up lessons as a hobby.

“I never even thought about doing it before that and had never had any formal music education. I only knew basic guitar chords, enough to entertain my friends at a campfire,” he said with a laugh.

He discovered his love for spinning and got so serious about it that he stopped the computer graphics course he was studying to pursue his interest full-time.

“Practice makes perfect but you really have to love it and immerse yourself in it,” said Goh, who now teach students in Malacca and occasionally plays gigs in Kuala Lumpur.

Goh will be performing at a club in Brisbane and would also get to meet DJ Tydi, currently one of the top DJs in Australia.

Astro Hitz channel manager Cheong Cheng Vei said that the response for the competition went beyond their expectations.

“Trends in deejaying have been picking up especially in the urban setting and it has not been done on TV before so we jumped at the opportunity,” Cheong said.

She added that the initial stages incorporated online voting and potential participants had to get their friends to vote for them through social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

“We then picked the top 20 for the elimination rounds. They were judged on their mixing skills, music presentation, personality, showmanship and interaction with the crowd,” she said.

Participants were judged by two resident judges, DJ Blink and DJ Goldfish, and a guest deejay each round.

DJ Goldfish said that they were surprised at the many deejaying talents that were out there.

DJ Blink said that besides the technical ability and flow of music, a deejay must also be able to communicate with the audience.

“Deejaying is an art as well. They must have the charisma to complete the package,” he said.

They agreed that the both DJ Reeve and DJ Hightech stood out throughout the elimination rounds and they were not surprised to see them at the finals.

DJ Reeve impressed the judges and thrilled the crowd when he brought out an electric guitar and incorporated some sounds midway into his 10-minute act.

“Reeve always had that something extra that he would introduce into his mixing. It’s natural for him and he makes deejaying look so easy,” said deejay Blastique, who was the guest judge for the finals.

APABILA tiba hari yang dinanti pasti pelbagai perkara yang terjadi akan terpahat dalam memori untuk diingati sampai bila-bila.

Tidak ketinggalan tiga nama terkenal dalam arena muzik hip hop, Joe Flizzow, Altimet dan DJ Fuzz turut mempunyai kenangan daripada pengalaman yang berlaku semasa mereka ingin menyambut hari yang mulia itu.

Joe Flizzow memulakan cerita pengalaman yang mungkin sukar untuk dia lupakan ialah ketika Hari Raya Aidilfitri beberapa tahun lepas.

Ketika itu dia bersama beberapa orang saudaranya sedang bermain mercun di kampungnya, tiba-tiba mereka didatangi sebuah kereta peronda polis.

“Polis itu ingatkan kanak-kanak yang main mercun itu tetapi kami yang boleh dianggap bapak kanak-kanak pula yang main. Polis itupun beredar selepas itu,” ujar Joe kelucuan pada ditemui sesi fotografi di Pejabat Warner Music, Petaling Jaya, Selangor baru baru ini.

Joe yang turut menggemari sejenis makanan ala Arab yang dikenali sebagai Arisa berkata, baginya tradisi kegiatan bermain mercun itu mungkin agak sukar untuk ditinggalkan kerana saat itu keseronokan itu datang.

TIGA anak muda serba moden ini tetap menjulang tradisi adat Melayu apabila hari raya menjelang tiba.

“Namun, ketika bermain mercun haruslah berhati-hati dan main di kawasan lapang seperti padang,” katanya yang wajib makan lodeh masakan emaknya setiap pagi raya.

Altimet naik bas lompat

Setiap orang pasti akan cuba sedaya upaya untuk pulang ke kampung halaman pada hari raya termasuklah bekas ahli kumpulan Teh Tarik Crew, Altimet.

Pengalaman Altimet atau nama sebenarnya Ahmad Alhadad, beberapa tahun lepas yang terpaksa balik ke kampungnya di Singapura menaiki bas lompat dari Kuala Lumpur kerana kehabisan tiket bas ekspres.

“Ketika itu saya terpaksa naik bas dari Kuala Lumpur hingga ke Seremban, dari Seremban saya naik bas ke Batu Pahat dan Batu Pahat ke Johor Bahru.

“Sampai di Johor Bahru bas ekspres ke Singapura sudah tiada, jadi saya menaiki bas hingga ke Woodland dan terpaksa menaiki tren MRT pulang ke rumah,” katanya.

Menurutnya yang meminati sejenis masakan daging dikenali sebagai dendeng yang dijual di Bazar Geylang, pengalaman menaiki bas lompat itu telah menyebabkan perjalanan yang sepatutnya memakan masa lima jam telah menjadi hampir separuh hari.

“Jika pulang ke Singapura pada bulan Ramadan saya mesti akan beli dendeng dan perkara itu sudah jadi satu kemestian.Selain itu, saya juga tidak akan lupa untuk membeli air khatira, minuman yang menyegarkan selepas seharian berpuasa,” jelasnya.

JOE, Altimet dan DJ Fuzz masing-masing memiliki pengalaman hari raya yang menarik dan tersendiri.

Pemilik nama sebenar Farzwa Emir, 33, DJ Fuzz ini pernah menyambut hari raya pertama di Tokyo, Jepun kerana menunaikan tuntutan kerjaya.

Jelasnya, semasa mendapat tawaran itu dia tidak mampu menolaknya kerana itu merupakan peluang yang tidak mampu dilepaskan.

“Ketika ditawarkan saya tengok tarikh persembahan itu jatuh pada hari raya pertama, lama juga saya fikirkan. Namun saya terima tawaran itu kerana sukar untuk dapat show macam itu.

“Saya terima dan anggap perkara itu sebagai lumrah sahaja,” katanya.

Tambah DJ Fuzz, apa yang membuatkan dirinya sayu ialah apabila bangun dari tidur sahaja di hotel. Kemudian sebelum persembahan bermula dia dan beberapa orang rakan yang turut pergi jalan-jalan di bandar raya Tokyo sambil pakai baju Melayu.

“Apa yang menariknya ketika pergi ke Tokyo itu saya telah membawa beberapa paket rendang segera. Ketika saya pulang ke Malaysia pada hari raya ketiga, feel raya pun dah kurang sebab kebanyakan orang dah mula kerja,” tuturnya ketawa.

Menurutnya, pada tahun ini dia beraya di Kuala Kangsar, Perak.

Newcomer bilingual singer-songwriter Yuna was the big story of the recent AIM17 awards.

IF the latest edition of the prestigious Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM17) on Sunday was anything to go by, the annual event still has a future ahead with a strong cast of newcomers and next generation acts.

Budgets have been trimmed for the event. And you might not see or hear the screaming pop fans like it used to be in the early years at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur, but the annual awards night is still significant to those who care about local music. It didn’t really matter whether you came from the indie scene or the mainstream since the AIM awards was the night where everyone, regardless of their musical preferences, had a chance to be recognised for their outstanding works.

And even though AIM17 was bumped to a Sunday slot (for the first time!) and only saw a handful of camera-toting fans lining up to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars on the red carpet (prior to the awards ceremony), that didn’t mean that this year’s AIM awards was any less glamorous.

With 24 awards up for grabs at Dewan Merdeka in PWTC, the night kicked-off with a promise when pop diva Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and her close friend Indonesian singer Kris Dayanti performed their award-winning duet Amarah much to the delight of the fans in the hall. But nothing could beat the roar of approval from the audience when the two affable hosts – Afdlin Shauki and Adibah Noor – appeared on stage introducing the awards night with a medley of improvised popular local songs.

For the past several years, this unlikely but delightful duo (minus Bob Lokman who was missing on stage this year) proved to be natural court jesters who charmed the crowd with their well-timed jokes and cheeky banter. Suffice to say they were the highlight for the (some times tedious) two-and-a-half hour AIM show.

In terms of live action, one of the highlights of the night was the much awaited performance by two young rising stars in the local scene, Yuna and Aizat, who were backed by a string ensemble led by renowned composer Ramli MS. Looking radiant and classy, Yuna delivered her hit Dan Sebenarnya while a Mod-looking Aizat took the chance to introduce his folk-driven new single Susun Silangkata.

To think that both of these acts were in pre-school when the first AIM awards was introduced. It used to be overblown R&B divas and screechy Malay rock or pop back in those days. It’s a case of trimming down the fat in the Malay pop scene now. Yuna and Aizat are just two new examples of this stripped down indie folk blend.
Disagree won Best Local English Album.

Another highlight for the night was a performance by Zee Avi who was flown in from the United States for the award night to perform Just You and Me and Kantoi, backed by her own three-piece band.

Zee, who is signed to a US-label, could not qualify as a “local artiste” for AIM consideration.

The intimate folk vibe was a nice touch through the evening. But it was still an awards show and you needed the divas with big voices to fill up the vast hall. A powerful rendition of Cinta Ada by Datuk Sheila Majid, Jaclyn Victor and Karen Kong got the audience screaming with delight. No surprises there!

And not to mention rocker Faizal Tahir who never fails to captivate the audience with his powerful performances and vocal prowess. He was a show-stealer at the AIM awards two years ago and he was at it again on Sunday.

Faizal performed Selamat Malam as a poignant tribute to local talents who have passed on in recent times.

And as far as the awards were concerned, throughout the night, it was obvious that no one would end up with a lion’s share of the awards. Well except for Yuna, whom some observers predicted to bag home several awards.
Faizal Tahir bagged the Album of the Year and Best Rock Album awards.

And much to her fans’ delight, Yuna, whose real name is Yunalis Zarai, was the big winner for the night by bagging four awards including Song of the Year (Dan Sebenarnya) and Best New Artiste. Yuna also won Best Local English Song for her Deeper Conversation and Best Pop Song for Dan Sebenarnya.

At AIM17, Yuna created a bit of history for herself as a newcomer act – winning in the Malay and English categories. No other Best New Artiste has gone on to win such major awards later in the night. Interestingly, Faizal Tahir managed four AIM awards as Best New Artiste in 2008 but he didn’t have an English category win.

These days, bilingual independent acts like Yuna arrive fully ready for the challenge and her music stood out in the crowd. Looking visibly overwhelmed, Yuna, 22, said she didn’t expect to win the awards. She thanked her bandmates and her parents for their continuous support for her musical pursuits and interest.

Elsewhere, Sitizone – as Siti’s fans would call themselves – weren’t disappointed at all when their idol bagged two awards. Siti won Best Vocal Performance in A Song for her rendition in Ku Percaya Ada Cinta. This was Siti’s mind-boggling 11th win (of the same award) since 1999 (except 2007 where she lost it to Jaclyn Victor).

In her acceptance speech, the always-gracious Siti said that she was happy that the fans and the judges still believed in her vocal ability to earn the award.

However, many were surprised when Siti lost the Best Pop Album award to Dayang Nurfaizah’s Dayang Live. Siti had two albums competing in the category with her Tahajjud Cinta and Ctkd.

His awards haul might have been smaller this year, but rocker Faizal Tahir did well enough with Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for his latest outing Adrenalin.

Accepting the award (for Best Rock) from his idols rock group Wings, Faizal said that the win was for the fans. “I grew up with Wings and Search songs and to actually be accepting this from Wings, I feel so honoured,” he gushed from the podium.

On the hip hop front, DJ Fuzz and Malique made it a clean sweep with Best Hip Hop album and song category wins. Their uncompromising KO The Mixtape, regarded as an underground favourite, came good on the night while the duo’s single Cerita Kedai Kopi (spouting tales of mind-expansion, infidelity, etc) was sublime lyrical mischief.

Popular songwriter-producer Adnan Abu Hassan was awarded the Anugerah Wirama award for his contribution to the local music industry.

Aired live on Ntv7, the night also saw pop punk outfit Bunkface taking home the Anugerah Kembara in recognition of the young band’s work and its successful trip to Australia last year.

Many times, a lot of people came to me and asked , “Is it necessary to learn in a DJ school? I can learn from my friends who is a DJ or I can learn it from the internet like youtube etc”
Well, in my opinion, you can learn djing in any way you want, you can sign up for dj classes,or you can even learn on your own. In fact a lot of greats DJs did not go to DJ school.

But why DJ Classes?

In DJ Classes, students are taught by experienced DJs. You will be taught in a systematic way and you will learn it much faster than doing it on your own because there is somebody to check on you every time you mess up. Your teacher is like your coach. They will monitor your progress and they will share with you all their secrets, tips and tricks.

On top of that, you are surrounded with people with the same goal, they wanna be a dj too. You can exchange knowledge, more opportunities can be seen, and you will be exposed to more things, much faster than self learning. On top of that, you will get a chance to network with the main djs in the industry.

Like I said, it is ok to learn on your own, but a DJ school is a place where you can learn it much faster and easier. Time is money, so don’t waste it.

Very well said... everything that you mentioned is why i joined mixology... and still feel very attached to it even though im hardly there... the part of getting tips and tricks from experienced DJs in mixology is so true with DJ Fuzz and DJ Krates... they have always answered each and every question i've had for them and always given their answers as experienced DJs... to me, they always share their tips, tricks and experiences which really helped me in understanding what it means to be a DJ!

CDJ VS Turntables -Which Is Better

Nowadays, there are many types of equipments DJs can use to rock the show. Unlike 20 years ago, today we have CD players, turntables, even Midi controllers that we can use in our performances. A lot of DJs today have different opinions about this matter. Some say that we have to stick to turntables because real DJs use wax and some say that we gotta keep up with the technology etc. A lot of seasoned/purist DJs even argue that CDJs and all these MP3 software are not real DJ tools. But many great DJs only use CDJs, so which one is better?

In my opinion, I think there is no “better” equipment. It all depends on what the DJ needs. To me a turntable is like a manual car while a CDJ is automatic. It’s good to start learning how to drive using a manual car because if u can drive it properly, automatic cars would be easier to handle. Some DJs prefer using turntables because it has got a better “feel”, but it is more convenient with CDJs because we can start a song with a push of a button. I like both equipments, because they have their own significant advantages and I enjoy using both of them. I love turntables because I can show off some skills using them. I got love for CDJs because they got so many features on them.

It’s not about what you use, it’s how you use them.

Most of the greatest DJs in the world embrace technology. They would rock their sets using laptops, turntables and CDJs. It doesn’t matter. A good DJ should be able to use anything. I have seen DJ Premier, DJ Jazzy Jeff , Tiesto and many others rock the show with both equipments. Turntables and CDJs.

Di Malaysia, ada beberapa DJ dikenali ramai seperti DJ Uno, DJ Fuzz dan DJ Cza yang banyak berkolaborasi dengan atris terkenal tempatan selain menghasilkan karya untuk penyanyi tersohor.

Hadirnya beberapa nama besar seperti itu menyebabkan ramai golongan muda dan remaja ketika ini membabitkan diri untuk bergelar DJ.

Kini wujud juga beberapa pusat pembelajaran untuk melahirkan DJ dan antara yang dikenali adalah Akademi DJ Mixology yang dikendalikan oleh Farzwa Emir, 33, atau DJ Fuzz.

Seperti pemuzik lain, DJ mempunyai alat tersendiri untuk menghibur, termasuk peralatan asas iaitu dua turntable iaitu sejenis instrumen gramofon yang membolehkan seseorang memutar piring hitam, mixer serta head phone.

DJ juga boleh menambah beberapa alatan lain untuk menghidupkan lagi persembahan mereka seperti panel break untuk menghentikan muzik, panel ultra-pitch dan fine pitch bagi memudahkan kerja adunan dan pemadanan bunyi dilakukan dengan tepat.

DJ Fuzz yang bertindak sebagai Pengarah Akademi DJ Mixology, berkata secara asasnya seseorang yang belajar menjadi DJ perlu menguasai peringkat awal turntable dalam masa tiga bulan sebelum dilanjutkan kepada kemahiran lain mengikut kemampuannya.

Menurutnya, seseorang itu sekurang-kurangnya akan mengambil masa setahun untuk menjadi DJ yang baik, termasuk cekap menggunakan panel tambahan dan teknik khas.

"Banyak teknik boleh dipraktikkan untuk seseorang DJ dan sebagai contoh diberi nama sebagai baby scratch iaitu satu kaedah menggerakkan tangan ke depan dan belakang dalam gerakan selari menghasilkan bunyi wiggy-wiggy.

"Ada juga teknik mengadun semula lagu secara live dengan memainkan versi instrumental pada satu turntable sambil memainkan lagu sama pada satu lagi turntable yang boleh menghasilkan satu rentak dikenali juggling.

"Rentak breakbeats pula untuk lagu hip-hop," katanya yang banyak menghasilkan lagu untuk artis seperti Too Phat, Altimet dan Ahli Fiqir yang lebih terdorong kepada muzik genre hip-hop dan elektro.

Bagi DJ Fuzz, di Malaysia ramai anak muda kini mempelajari teknik menjadi DJ. Tambahan pula wujud pelbagai cabang dan peluang kerjaya berbanding beberapa tahun lalu yang dipandang sepi disebabkan ramai tidak yakin.

Fuzz menjelaskan, bermain turntable sebenarnya mula berkembang pada akhir 1980-an dan sejak itu ia mula berkembang, sekali gus wujud beberapa pusat melahirkan DJ di ibu negara.

Akademi DJ Mixologi melahirkan kira-kira 100 DJ sejak ditubuhkan kira-kira enam tahun lalu iaitu bermula beberapa peringkat latihan iaitu asas hingga dapat mencipta lagu.

Nasihat DJ Fuzz kepada sesiapa yang berminat menjadi DJ adalah, setiap kemahiran boleh diasah dengan melakukan latihan berterusan dengan mendalami lebih banyak teknik.

Dengan minat mendalam terhadap muzik dan latihan berterusan serta membuat rujukan teknik daripada DJ terkenal luar negara mampu melatih diri untuk menjadi DJ lebih baik dan berkemahiran tinggi.

Mixing with one deck and Scratch Live

There's nothing worse than showing up to a gig, only to find that one of the decks isn't working properly. However, with Scratch Live this needn't ruin your night. Using the Instant Doubles feature, you can still mix effectively using one turntable or CDJ.

Make sure "instant doubles" is checked in the the playback tab of the setup screen and that "lock playing deck" is unchecked.

Let's say the right deck is functioning properly. Load a track onto the right deck in Scratch Live and play as usual. Put the left virtual deck into Internal mode, then load the same song you have playing on the right deck onto the left deck. The track on the left will start playing from the same point and at the same pitch as the right deck.

Make sure the EQs, gains and faders are set the same way as the right deck, then quickly slide the cross fader over to the left deck. Your right deck is now free to load up a new song ready to mix in. Easy!

Pream Anand was raised in Klang and music became a part of him at the age of 12 after listening to Michael Jackson, Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer. Now, this 30 year old DJ Baby Joe Black is making a name for himself at clubs like Borneo Rainforest, Coco Banana, Titainium Super Dance Club and many others. Not only does he spinning a various mix of English hip hop and rnb, he can also dish out Tamil, Hindi and Desi hits on the decks. DJ Baby Joe Black graduated from DJ Fuzz’s Mixology Academy together with JUICE DJ Quest Turntable champion last year, DJ Krates. Let’s get personal.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
Press the snooze button and go back to sleep!

Name the worst job you’ve had to do?
Stand and watch other DJ spin when I am supposed to be on the decks.

What do you do before you go on stage?
That is such a good question. Know yourself and say a prayer. There’s a special exercise where you just breathe in, close your eyes and feel the earth. Remember who you are and then breathe that in. I do that to calm myself and then I just want to go out there to spin my music. That’s my new little trick that I’m doing as a ritual before I get up on stage.

When was the last time someone hit on you?
I love this question. Well almost everytime I hit the club, I get hit. Tell me something new.

What’s the coolest thing in your room?
It used to be my vinyl records on my walls. Last Christmas, I received a gift ‘3D last supper potrait’ gift, so that’s the coolest thing now on my wall.

Who’s your all-time favourite hero?
The one and only king- Michael Jackson. When I was younger, I used to drink Pepsi cause Michael Jackson was sponsored by Pepsi and I thought if I did, someday I will dance like Michael.

When was the last time you cried?
Big boys don’t cry. (laughs) Well, I do have a soft spot for sentimental songs. It was during New Years. They were tears of joy

Who would you most likely invite for dinner?
Some hot chick. Most probably a female DJ. Any hot one out there?

What would you change about yourself?
I always wanted to be a professional basketball player. I dreamt of playing in the NBA.

So, you’re the big winner of Quattro’s Face Off competition. How does that feel? Tell me about what it was like going through the whole judging process.

It really felt good and feels great even now! During the judging process I was so stressed out because I was up against some of the finest DJs nationwide. It thrilled me even more facing the panel of judges that were pioneers in the field.

Now be honest, did you feel the competition was strong or did you know you’d easily win?
It's really tough, no doubt! Going against all the competitors really cracks my head to dig for something different from the rest. As I went through every round the pressure was getting more and more intense but in the end of the day I had fun. Props to Quattro for organizing such a battle.

How were the reactions of your friends and music peers to it all?
They've been very supportive by traveling to KL to support me [Reeve is from Melaka]. I would say overall all of them were happy to see me win this battle. I'd like to give a special thanks to my partner DJ Silent, and to thank everyone that been supporting me all this while. Without them, I wouldn't had made it this far.

You’re technique is pretty amazing. How did it all evolve?
This goes back to when it started three years ago. I was inspired by the likes of Mix Master Mike , DJ Am, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ A-Trak, and many more. These are the guys that actually taught me what’s the true meaning of being a DJ. I’d like to give a big shout out to DJ Fuzz for showing me the path towards turntabilsm.

You’re also very collaborative. How do you select the people you’ll play with?
That's a tough question. Well, it's hard for me to find someone who can collaborate with me. Fortunately, I met a few who shares the same love and passion towards music.

Now what? Do you want to do records, play out in clubs? What’s the big picture for you?
My dream is to be internationally known as a DJ.

GESEKAN jari jemari disc jockey (DJ) di atas piring hitam bermain instrumen turntable ketika mengadakan persembahan mampu menarik perhatian dan memukau penonton.

Kehalusan dan kepantasan gerak geri tangan mereka mengendalikan turntable membuatkan penonton tidak senang duduk ternanti-nanti muzik tanpa henti yang bakal diperdengarkan kepada mereka.

Apabila muzik berkumandang, rentak bass mula membuatkan kaki bergerak disusuli badan dan tangan mengikuti lagu yang semakin pantas sehingga membuatkan jantung berdegup kencang. Impaknya, seluruh ruang ibarat pesta!

Demikian antara daya penarik artis bernama DJ yang tidak perlu menyanyi di depan penonton tetapi hanya menggunakan teknik dan gaya tersendiri dalam mengendalikan turntable untuk menghiburkan penggemar muzik.

Naz Muammar Zar, 26, atau lebih dikenali Nas-T berkata, kerjaya sebagai seorang DJ merupakan cabang seni yang semakin mendapat tempat dalam industri muzik tempatan.

NAS-T (tengah) dan Fuzz melakukan demonstrasi penggunaan turntable dan mixer.

“Tidak banyak perbezaan yang dapat dilihat oleh seorang DJ dan pemuzik lain. Mereka menggunakan instrumen seperti gitar, dram dan piano untuk bermain muzik.

“DJ pula akan menggunakan turntable, mesin mixer dan fon kepala untuk menghiburkan penggemar muzik,” katanya yang menyimpan keazaman mengendalikan turntable sejak berusia 17 tahun.

Nas-T menambah, bagi menguasai teknik dan kemahiran sebagai seorang DJ, peralatan asas yang diperlukan ialah dua turntable, satu mesin mixer serta fon kepala.

Katanya lagi, terdapat banyak jenama turntable di pasaran tetapi kebanyakan kelab-kelab dan profesional menggunakan jenama Vestax PDX-2000MKII.

Antara nama-nama besar yang menggunakan jenama Vestax termasuklah Carl Cox, DJ Krush, DJ Heather, Jeff Mills, Johnny Fiasco, Towa Tei, Mix Master Mike, Satoshi Tomiie, D-Styles, DJ Scratch dan DJ Qbert.

Turntable Vestax PDX-2000MKII mempunyai berat 9.5 kilogram (kg) amat sesuai digunakan oleh DJ profesional dan mereka yang baru menceburi bidang itu kerana didatangkan dengan teknologi Anti Skipping Tonearm System (ASTS) bagi memudahkan penggunaannya.

Ciri-ciri lain yang boleh digunakan ialah panel break untuk menghentikan muzik, panel ultra-pitch dan fine pitch bagi memudahkan kerja adunan dan pemadanan bunyi dilakukan dengan tepat.

PERALATAN asas yang menjadi instrumen DJ untuk menghiburkan penggemar muzik.

Apakah turntable?, Nas-T menjelaskan ia merupakan evolusi instrumen gramofon yang membolehkan seseorang memutar rekod piring hitam yang dilengkapi teknologi terkini agar dapat digunakan oleh DJ-DJ.

Selain turntable, Nas-T menambah, mesin mixer Vestax PMC-07 turut digunakan untuk mengawal rentak, bunyi dan lagu-lagu yang diputarkan apabila mengadakan persembahan ataupun berlatih secara sendirian.

“Kalau melihat persembahan, penonton akan melihat fon kepala tidak berenggang daripada DJ kerana ia dapat membantu mereka memastikan kesinambungan lagu dapat dilakukan dengan sempurna.

“Teknologi pada hari ini semakin berkembang dan terdapat Pioneer CDJ-800 yang memudahkan menyimpan rekod-rekod lagu dalam mesin berkenaan serta tidak perlu membawa rekod piring hitam yang banyak apabila melakukan persembahan,” kata pelakon siri drama Blogger Boy itu.

Dalam pada itu, Ceza Mutyara, 27, atau DJ Cza berkata, penggemar muzik yang ingin menjadi seorang DJ perlu membelanjakan sekurang-kurangnya RM6,000 untuk membeli peralatan asas.

“Adalah lebih baik jika mereka dapat membeli peralatan sendiri kerana dapat melakukan latihan dan mempelajari teknik-teknik terkini dengan baik,” katanya.

TURNTABLE jenama Vestax PDX-2000MKII dan mesin Vestax PMC-07 merupakan antara peralatan asas untuk menjadi DJ.

Sementara itu, Pengarah Akademi DJ Mixology, Farzwa Emir, 33, atau lebih dikenali sebagai DJ Fuzz berkata, seseorang boleh bermain turntable dengan baik dalam tempoh tiga bulan asalkan ada asas dan minat yang mendalam terhadap bidang ini.

“Di Malaysia, fenomena turntable mula berkembang pada akhir 1980-an dan sejak kebelakangan ini ia semakin dikenali dan diminati penggemar muzik tempatan.

“Kalau dilihat ada beberapa cabang DJ yang memainkan turntable ini mengikut minat masing-masing seperti ke arah genre muzik hip-hop ataupun elektro,” ujarnya.

Fuzz menambah, antara teknik yang boleh dipraktikkan oleh peminat turntable ialah baby scratch, iaitu kaedah menggerakkan tangan ke depan dan belakang dalam gerakan selari menghasilkan bunyi wiggy-wiggy.

“Rentak juggling iaitu teknik mengadun semula lagu secara live dengan memainkan versi instrumental pada satu turntable sambil memainkan lagu yang sama pada satu lagi turntable. Breakbeats pula merupakan rentak digunakan sebagai asas perkusi untuk lagu hip-hop.

SALAH seorang pelajar di Akademi DJ Mixology menunjukkan bakatnya bermain turntable.

“Chirp Scratch adalah bunyi seperti kicauan burung, atau versi baby scratch yang lebih cepat tetapi lebih panjang dengan menarik rekod ke belakang untuk menghasilkan bunyi. Selain itu terdapat banyak lagi teknik-teknik menarik yang boleh dipelajari olrh penggemar turntable ini,” ujarnya.

Tambah Fuzz, seseorang yang ingin menjadi DJ berkebolehan perlu melakukan latihan berterusan untuk mendalami lebih banyak teknik. Dalam komuniti di Malaysia penggiat turntable ini dikenali sebagai Kelab DJ atau Battle DJ.

Katanya, sebagai seorang DJ mereka boleh menjadi pemuzik latar untuk artis-artis terkemuka dan bertindak secara bersendirian mengadakan persembahan mengawal penonton berhibur.

Pream Anand, more famously known as DJ Baby Joe Black, born on 4th September 1980 raised in Klang till the age of 13. His passion for music started at the age of 12 when he started listening to music from artists like Michael Jackson, Vanilla Ice, Mc Hammer and etc. During the early growth of the hip hop era and RnB industry in the 90’s, with music as his passion he then learned the skills of disc jockeying from his cousin Glenn George aka DJ Grinz (DO RE Mi), a well known DJ from Klang who use to spin in Klang Royal Club. While learning how to spin and mix with his cousin Glenn George aka DJ Grinz to do events, he made his name by stealing attentions from events like BONIA-Annual Dinner, GUESS-product launch and GSC (Golden Screen Cinema)-Annual Dinner and turning them into big opportunities.

In 2007 he decided to take his 1st residency at Monti’s Sunway after many demands from his friends and fans where he stole the attentions of many hearts with his unique music selections from various genres like Desi, Hindi, RnB, Hip Hop, Reggae Ton and etc while stealing music lovers from Borneo Rainforest, Sunway Hotel, Coco Banana, Bar Flames and many others clubs around Sunway. He then became recognized in the entertainment industry and then started to attract people from out of state due to his ultimate taste with his music selections.

After a year being with Monti’s, he then grabbed new opportunities to be the resident DJ at Home and Away Sports Bar in Sri Hartamas where he continued to attract many music lovers from all races and ages around Malaysia. DJ Baby Joe Black not only spins English, Hindi, Desi but also Tamil old and new top numbers where he attracted a multiracial crowd. DJ Baby Joe Black was also the Official DJ and Emcee for Home and Away weekly Barclay’s English Premier League Soccer Events sponsored by Carlsberg. He also Emceed for every Man Utd matches every week held in Home and Away for the Man Utd Fans sponsored by Tiger FC and Carlsberg.

Baby Joe Black was the official DJ for the Songkran Water Splash Party, Bollywood Night, Couples Night Out, for Carlsberg meet the stars (ex Manchester United Player) visit to Home and Away. He was also invited by Malaysia HHH (Hash House Harriers) Members to Emcee and DJ for their 2008 Full Moon Jungle Party cum Annual Dinner for 1000 pax in Jerantut, Pahang along with guest DJ Danny D and they rocked the 25km deep jungle private party for the HHH members spinning all night long by the river side. While spinning, mixing and blending the music, Baby Joe Black was then invited to spin along side with Malaysia’s ever so famous MDJ DEV at Club Aman for a private function.

In 2008 DJ Joe Black continues to share his love for music, while spinning at Titanium Super Dance Club blasting off along with the Resident DJ, DJ HUM. In 2009 DJ Joe Black has done an event for Titanium Super Dance Club such as Retro Night, Afro Night, Ladies Night, Old SKool Night and many other events.

In 2009 DJ Joe Black has done an event for Titanium Super Dance Club such as Retro Night, Afro Night, Ladies Night, Old Skool Night, private wedding reception and the after party for Tengku Suraya which was attended by the Yang Berbahagia Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agung and many other events. Not contented with the response from the urban market, DJ Joe Black started stepping into the Indian club industries, where he started with; an Open Night event for Tangaval Dance Club located along Jalan Ipoh along side with DJ Vicky aka Puchandy.

As learning is a never ending journey, DJ Joe Black has completed his professional DJ classes with DJ Krates at Mixology Academy under Malaysian Greatest DJ Fuzz from The Bum Squad, as an official Bum Squad DJ based in Los Angeles, USA. It was always his dream to learn DJing under the best DJ Fuzz. DJ Fuzz has a collection of championships under his belt, being the winner for The Vestax Extravaganza, as well as The Pioneer Digital DJ Battle Championships. DJ Fuzz is the only individual to have won the Pioneer Digital DJ Battle 3 years in a row (more recently in 2005), as well as being the first Malaysian DJ to have done so. Being to learn under DJ Fuzz and completing his DJ classed was a ultimate dream come true for DJ Baby Joe Black.

Hip hop DJs are not all scary. That’s safe to say about the household name of DJ Fuzz, one of the most hardworking DJ in Malaysia. He’s the guy who turns it up in the clubs, runs Mixology DJ Academy, releases his tees through Xrossfade, collaborates with the other half of Too Phat, Malique on one of the best local hip hop release KO: The Mixtape, and rolls with Bum Squad DJ Malaysia. We asked him to give us 5 minutes of his busy schedule to get an update on what he’s been up to.
What have you got planned to start the New Year?
I got a few projects that I’m currently working on right now, Mixology 3 will becoming out in third quarter 2010. I’m in the process of completing my DJ Manual that should be ready by the second quarter 2010. There will be a mixtape with Yeyo of The DEY for the first quarter of the year, more Xrossfade shirts and I’m also planning to open a new Mixology DJ Academy branch in Penang by mid 2010.

Busy busy man! You are probably the busiest hip hop DJ in Malaysia, what do you do on your down time?
I like to travel with my wifey, read, hang with my students at the academy, kick it with my boys, and rest a lot.

Anymore t-shirt projects coming in the New Year?
Oh yes, expect to get new releases every quarter of the year. For now, u can purchase Xrossfade shirts at any Echo Park stores in Malaysia or u can buy it straight from my blog at djfuzz.blogspot.com. You can also buy DJ equipments, mixtapes and a whole lot more in my blog.

You’ve been touring quite a lot. How different is it to being in KL?
Well, different countries have different tastes and preferences. Usually a big hit in KL doesn’t mean it will work in Taiwan. It’s all about your skills and playlists. I need to study the crowd a few days before the gig. Gotta find out what songs are Fuzz-able for the crowd.

Any local act we should watch out for in 2010?
Yeah, check out all the acts from Rogue Squadron. They’re moving fast and you need to catch up. Check out Kraft, Tactmatic and Dose Two. Don’t forget the local Tamil hip hop scene, they gettin’ real big right now. Don’t forget our DJs and producers too.

You’re a big fan of kung fu. What triggered it?
When I was a younger, I used to rent a lot of kung fu videos. I started watching these videos when I was 7, back in 1984. That was because my mum didn’t want me to spend time outside the house and it was my form of entertainment. I think I got most of the kung fu DVDs and VCDs! I love collecting them. Whenever I’m out of the country I’ll also look for rare kung fu DVDs. It’s not only kung fu, but I also collect other martial arts movies.

What does DJ Fuzz do on a weekend?
Besides spinning on a Saturday night, I’ll be at the mall browsing for books, or I’ll be home in front of my computer making beats, making mixtape and doing all that internet stuff on my blog, Facebook, MySpace and all that. Yeah, I’m a nerd.

What’s your favourite type of burger?
I’m a fan of Chili’s burgers from the basic ones to the ones thats topped with Chili con carne.

Beatmaking 101
This 12-session course is designed for people who want to start making beats. No prior music knowledge is required. Students will receive hands on training in MIDI sequencing and learn the basics of digital music production. Each student will learn at his or her own workstation equipped with a laptop computer and MIDI keyboard. Students will learn to use Reason, Sony, Fruity Loops and other music softwares to make their beats. Instruction is taught on a PC. However, the skills learned are applicable to Macs as well. At the conclusion of the 12 sessions, each student will leave the course with 3-6 complete beats and several production sequences to be used for future beat making. This course is ideal for men and women interested in starting their career in music production, or for those interested in picking up a new hobby.
